Latisse – Frequently Asked Questions

Learn how Latisse works, how to apply it correctly, what results to expect, and the safety considerations to keep in mind.

What is Latisse? +

Latisse® (bimatoprost ophthalmic solution 0.03%) is the only prescription, FDA-approved treatment clinically proven to grow eyelashes, making them longer, thicker, and darker.

It was originally developed as a glaucoma eye drop (Lumigan), and its eyelash-enhancing effect was discovered as a side benefit.

How does Latisse work? +

Latisse is believed to work in two main ways:

  • It increases the duration of the eyelash growth phase (anagen phase).
  • It increases the number of hairs that grow during that phase.

The result is lashes that appear noticeably longer, fuller, and darker over time with consistent use.

How do I use Latisse correctly? +

Latisse is applied once nightly to the base of the upper eyelashes (like eyeliner):

  • Start with a clean, makeup-free face and remove contact lenses.
  • Place one drop of Latisse on the sterile, single-use applicator.
  • Carefully draw the applicator along the skin at the base of the upper lashes, from the inner to the outer corner.
  • Blot any excess solution that extends beyond the eyelid margin.
  • Dispose of the applicator and use a new one for the other eye.

Latisse is not meant for the lower lash line. Applying it only to the upper lashes is usually enough to see full results.

User tip (off-label): Some patients, with their provider’s approval, use a clean, very thin eyeliner brush for more precise application, which may also help the bottle last longer.

Can I wear mascara and contact lenses while using Latisse? +

Yes. You can continue to wear mascara and contact lenses.

  • Apply Latisse at night after removing makeup.
  • Remove contact lenses before application.
  • Wait at least 15 minutes after applying Latisse before reinserting your lenses.
Can I use Latisse on my eyebrows? +

Latisse is FDA-approved only for eyelashes, but it is commonly prescribed off-label for eyebrows. Many users report fuller, thicker brows when applying it carefully to sparse areas.

Always discuss off-label eyebrow use with your provider, especially to minimize unwanted hair growth outside the treatment area.

When will I see results from Latisse? +

Results are gradual and require consistent nightly use:

  • Early changes may appear in as little as 4–8 weeks.
  • Full, dramatic results are typically seen around 16 weeks.

Your provider may recommend continuing long-term maintenance after 16 weeks to help preserve results.

What happens if I stop using Latisse? +

Latisse is not permanent. If you stop using it, your lashes will gradually return to their original length, thickness, and color over several weeks to months as your normal lash cycle resumes.

Do I need a prescription for Latisse? +

Yes. Latisse is a prescription medication and must be prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider after reviewing your eye health and medical history.

What are the most common side effects of Latisse? +

Common side effects are usually mild and may include:

  • Eye redness
  • Itchy or irritated eyes
  • Dry eyes
  • Darkening of the eyelid skin (hyperpigmentation) where the solution is applied — often reversible if the product is discontinued.
What are the serious potential side effects I should know about? +

Less common but important potential risks include:

  • Permanent iris darkening: Increased brown pigmentation of the colored part of the eye, more likely in people with lighter eye colors.
  • Periorbital fat loss: Thinning of the fat around the eyes, which may cause a sunken or hollow appearance and may not be reversible.
  • Unwanted hair growth: Hair growth can occur in areas where the solution regularly drips or spreads.

Always wipe away excess product and avoid letting it run onto other areas of skin.

How much does Latisse cost? +

Pricing can vary based on brand vs. generic and pharmacy:

  • Brand-name Latisse: Around $99–$175+ for a 3mL or 5mL bottle.
  • Generic bimatoprost: Often significantly less, sometimes around $35–$65 with pharmacy discount programs.
