Educational overview of GLP-1 medications and compounded options
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in both Wegovy® and Ozempic®, used to help regulate appetite and blood-sugar levels. These branded medications differ in their FDA indications and dosage ranges:
| Medication | FDA-Approved Use | Typical Maintenance Dose | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wegovy® (semaglutide) | Chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight (with weight-related conditions) | Up to 2.4 mg weekly after gradual titration | FDA-approved for weight-management therapy |
| Ozempic® (semaglutide) | Glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes | 0.5 mg, 1 mg, or 2 mg weekly (max 2 mg) | FDA-approved for diabetes; sometimes prescribed off-label for weight management |
When clinically appropriate and permitted by law, NU Health may coordinate access to compounded semaglutide through qualified 503A/503B pharmacies. These formulations are not FDA-approved and are prepared using semaglutide base — not semaglutide sodium or acetate salt forms (which the FDA has stated should not be used for compounding).
Most members begin feeling a difference within weeks — improved appetite control, better focus, renewed energy.
Over time, consistent progress adds up to visible results and lasting change.
Every body is unique, so results vary, but your provider will guide you safely each step of the way.
